The Final Journey: an event for the living about the dying.
This Greater Alton Project event, open to the whole town, has again been organised by Alton Anglicans and Methodists, and will be held at Alton Methodist Church on
Saturday 14 October, 10:00am – 4:00pm.
The event is an opportunity to come along, ask questions and find out about all things to do with death and bereavement. Keynote speakers (on the quarter past the hour throughout the day) for 10-15 mins – drop in to listen then find out more on:
- end of life care
- registering a death
- wills and power of attorney
- organ donation and leaving one’s body to medical science
- CRUSE bereavement support
Local undertakers will be represented. There will be coffins and urns to look at, limousines outside the church, tours of the local chapel of rest, resources for exploring bereavement with children, funeral plans and floral tributes.
There will be “listening corners” for those who need to share one-to-one.
All visitors will have the opportunity to write down the names of loved ones who have died, then add them to a memory tree; as well as thinking about what to include in their own “Bucket List”.
Entrance is free. Teas/coffees will be available throughout the day.
Revd David Hinks (Parish of the Resurrection’s Associate Vicar and one of this event’s co-ordinators ) said: “Death is something we all have to face, but often we know so little about the practicalities: what to expect and what needs to be done. We hope this event will help people find out more, ask questions, feel able to talk about and share their anxieties with those who specialise in this area. Death is perhaps the last taboo. This day is intended to be a help, enabling us to think and prepare for that ‘Final Journey'”.
